Course Description

This one-day workshop provides hands-on experience and practical techniques involved in performing high-voltage tests and measurements, and explains how to make such tests and measurements in accordance to relevant international and Australian standards. The course is recommended for anyone interested to improve their skills and knowledge in high-voltage tests and measurements. Please find the link to the brochure here.

NOTE: Participants with limited experience in estimating measurement uncertainty would benefit from first attending the Introduction to Estimating Measurement Uncertainty course.

Course will start at 9 am and will finish by 5 pm.

Location: NMI, 36 Bradfield Rd, Lindfield, NSW, 2070

Knowledge and skills

The course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to:

• understand the fundamentals relevant to high-voltage tests and measurements, such as dielectric properties of high-voltage insulation systems and partial discharge
• select and utilise correct high-voltage equipment and devices for conducting specific tests and measurements, as well as procedures and practice
• obtain and interpret test and measurement results, such as the insulation breakdown voltage, partial discharge level, dielectric dissipation factor (DDF), voltage ratio error, phase displacement, etc.
• recognise various limitations and sources of error that affect high-voltage tests and measurements

Topics

The topics covered include:

• terminology, procedures and standards used in the high-voltage test and measurement methods
• circuit arrangements and performing DC, AC and impulse tests and measurements
• IEC and Australian standards and techniques used in testing specific high-voltage apparatus such as high-voltage switchgear, instrument transformers, insulator assemblies, power transformers, reactors and synchronous condensers
• standards and techniques used for the calibration of high-voltage measurement systems such as high-voltage voltmeters, high-voltage instrument transformers and impulse measurement systems
• examples of estimating measurement uncertainties, for example uncertainty of high voltage voltmeter calibration, uncertainty of DDF measurement and uncertainty of atmospheric correction factor for voltage withstand testing of outdoor insulation, etc.
• safety precautions, processes and measures
• normative references and laboratory accreditation requirements

Demonstration Options

(two to three - upon participants’ specific interest):
1. Voltage withstand test on high-voltage insulators (AC, impulse or steep impulse)
2. Partial discharge test on a high-voltage current transformer
3. Accuracy testing of a voltage transformer and/or current transformer
4. DDF measurement on a high-voltage capacitor
5. DDF measurement on a high-voltage current transformer
6. Corona and radio interference voltage (RIV) testing of insulators
7. Corona and radio interference voltage (RIV) testing of a transmission line fitting (dampers or spacers)

In-house option

Training may be carried out at your premises for groups of 6+ on a fee for service basis. We can offer some test and measure demonstrations for in-house training depending on client requirements and availability of appropriate in-house lab space and equipment
